How to cook Perfect Rice without Pressure Cooker

It is very easy to make rice in a pressure cooker. But today we will learn how to make perfect rice in a saucepan easily without pressure cooker. This process comes handy in situations when your pressure cooker is occupied or you want to make rice differently.

Ingredients:

  • Rice (250g)
  • A piece of cinnamon
  • A bay leaf
  • Salt (½ teaspoon)
  • Water as needed

Method:

1. Take 250 grams of Basmati rice in a pot. Any other readily available good quality rice is also fine.

2. Wash the rice in the pot 2-3 times with clean water.

ü   Kitchen Tip: The water used for washing the rice is good for plants. It can be re-used for gardening purpose.

3. Cover the washed rice and rest it for at least 10 to 15 minutes.

4. After 15 minutes, take a saucepan that can hold at least 2 to 2½ liters of water. Heat at least 1½ liters of water in that pot.

5. When the water starts boiling in the pot, add ½ teaspoon of salt, a piece of cinnamon, a bay leaf and the soaked rice.

6. Stir the rice and water occasionally, so that it does not stick down.

7. Boil it covered for a while, at least one to two minutes, but be careful not to overcook.

8. Then open the lid and stir it once again.

9. Now the rice should be cooked for some more time (depending on the variety of rice) without cover.

10. Pick up a grain of rice with the stirrer and press it to see how mature it is. If the rice grains seem to be 90 to 95 percent cooked, turn off the gas and separately pour the water of the cooked rice to another clean container.

11. But you need to be very careful while separating the water of the cooked rice (as this water includes the starch of rice which will very hot and sticky, so avoid its contact with skin for preventing any kind of burn). You can separate it to another container by holding the sauce pan carefully with a dry cloth.

ü      Kitchen Tip: The water with starch of cooked rice can be used to make many kinds of soups. It is very nutritious and healthy. Even drinking this rice starch water after cooling, can improve the nutrition in small children.

12. The prepared rice can be served after leaving it covered for 10 minutes. This will give the rice fluffier look.
